Study Highlights the Most Affordable UK Universities for International Students

A new study ranks Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen as the most affordable UK university for international students, based on tuition fees. Cardiff University is noted for its low relocation costs and affordable living expenses. The University of Nottingham and Queen Margaret University provide the highest number of part-time job opportunities for international students.

Most Affordable UK Universities

A recent study conducted by Edumentors has identified the top ten most affordable universities in the UK for international students, based on a detailed analysis of tuition fees, living expenses, and relocation costs. The findings shed light on the factors influencing affordability and provide valuable insights for prospective students.

Edumentors’ recent study ranked the ten most affordable UK universities for international students by looking at tuition fees, living costs, and relocation expenses. The study collected information from official university websites, cost-of-living calculators, and other trusted sources to assess tuition, yearly living expenses, and costs like airfare, visa fees, accommodation, and local transport. The data was then adjusted to create an Affordability Index, ranking universities from 0 (most affordable) to 100 (least affordable), giving a clear comparison of how affordable each university is for international students.

Top Ten Affordable Universities

  1. Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen: Ranked first with an Affordability Index of 15.46, Robert Gordon University boasts the lowest average tuition fees at £4,640. With relocation costs at £2,213 and 46 part-time job opportunities, it stands out as the most affordable option.
  2. Cardiff University: With an Affordability Index of 29.17, Cardiff University offers the lowest relocation costs at £2,063 and the most affordable living expenses at £773 per month.
  3. Leeds Trinity University: Ranked third with an Affordability Index of 29.59, Leeds Trinity University shares similar relocation costs to Robert Gordon University but provides 83 part-time job opportunities, making it attractive for students seeking financial independence.
  4. The Manchester College: The Manchester College’s Affordability Index of 33.35 reflects its strong offering of 95 part-time jobs and a manageable living cost of £821 per month, though tuition fees are higher.
  5. Birmingham City University: With an Affordability Index of 33.65, Birmingham City University offers 65 part-time job opportunities and a living cost of £791 per month, balancing higher tuition fees with potential earnings.
  6. Liverpool Hope University: Ranking sixth, Liverpool Hope University’s £2,088 relocation cost and 92 part-time job opportunities make it a favourable choice for international students.
  7. Sheffield Hallam University: The seventh-ranked university has an Affordability Index of 36.29. It provides 46 part-time job opportunities, with living costs at £825 per month.
  8. Northumbria University: Northumbria University, with an Affordability Index of 39.00, balances £13,000 tuition fees with 65 part-time job opportunities and a living cost of £791 per month.
  9. University of Nottingham: Ranked ninth, the University of Nottingham offers the most part-time job opportunities (465) and a relatively low cost of living (£789 per month). Its Affordability Index is 41.46.
  10. Queen Margaret University: Rounding out the list, Queen Margaret University matches Nottingham in job opportunities and has tuition fees of £9,250. Despite higher living costs (£859 per month), its overall affordability is notable.

Insights for prospective students

This study underscores the importance of evaluating all factors contributing to affordability, from tuition fees to cost of living and job opportunities. International students are encouraged to explore these rankings and make informed decisions based on their priorities. As Edumentors emphasised, thorough research into a university’s full costs can significantly enhance a student’s overall experience and financial well-being.

A spokesperson from Edumentors commented on the study: “When choosing a university abroad, affordability is a key factor, and it’s not just about tuition fees. Consider the total cost of relocation, including travel and living expenses, as well as job opportunities to help manage costs. Some cities offer a lower cost of living and cheaper relocation, while others provide more part-time job options, giving you a better chance to earn while you study. Balancing these factors can make a big difference in your overall experience, so it’s important to research not only the fees but the full cost of living in your chosen city.”
