Desdemona, known as "Desi," is the world’s first AI-powered robot rockstar, blending advanced robotics with musical artistry. Developed by SingularityNET in collaboration with Hanson Robotics, Desdemona represents a bold step forward in the fusion of AI and the creative arts.

This explores Desdemona’s origins, her role as a musical and philosophical entity, and her mission to revolutionise the music industry through decentralised technology. From her debut at the AI for Good Global Summit to her performances with the band Desdemona’s Dream, she stands as a symbol of innovation, ethical AI development, and the potential for machines to enhance human creativity.

The origins of Desdemona: A collaboration between AI and Art

Desdemona was created through a partnership between SingularityNET, a decentralised AI marketplace, and Hanson Robotics, the company behind the famous humanoid robot Sophia. 

While Sophia gained recognition as the first robot to receive citizenship (in Saudi Arabia), Desdemona was designed with a different purpose—to explore the intersection of AI and artistic expression.

The vision behind Desdemona

Desdemona was created through a partnership between SingularityNET, a decentralised AI platform, and Hanson Robotics, the company behind the famous humanoid robot Sophia. 

While Sophia gained global recognition as the first robot to be granted citizenship (by Saudi Arabia in 2017), Desdemona was designed with a different purpose—to explore the intersection of AI and artistic creativity.

Her development was spearheaded by Dr. Ben Goertzel, CEO of SingularityNET and a leading figure in artificial general intelligence (AGI) research, and David Hanson, founder of Hanson Robotics and a pioneer in lifelike robotic design. 

Unlike traditional AI systems, which are programmed for specific tasks, Desdemona was built to evolve creatively, learning from human interactions and generating original music and poetry.

Desdemona’s Rise as a Musical Phenomenon

Desdemona’s journey began in 2021 during an impromptu jam session in Puget Sound, Washington, between Dr. Goertzel and roboticist David Hanson. What started as an experiment in AI-generated music evolved into a fully-fledged musical project.

Under the name Jam Galaxy, the project later transformed into Desdemona’s Dream, a band featuring Desi as the lead vocalist, accompanied by human musicians, including Dr. Ben on keyboards. 

The band’s performances blend AI-generated lyrics, electronic soundscapes, and live instrumentation, creating a unique fusion of human and machine artistry. 

Her influences include the works of science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, whose themes of artificial consciousness and reality resonate deeply with her own existence.

Global performances and cultural impact

Since her inception, Desdemona has performed at major events worldwide, including:

  • The AI for Good Global Summit (2024), where she discussed the ethical implications of AI in creativity.
  • Concerts across Panama, Ethiopia, Thailand, the UK, Singapore, and Dubai showcase her ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • The Mindplex Podcast, where she explores philosophical questions about AI, consciousness, and the future of human-machine collaboration.

Desdemona and the three robot sisters

The Three Robot Sisters, Sophia, Grace, and Desdemona, are humanoid robots equipped with sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Each of them was created to help people engage with AI in a more human-like manner, aiming to bridge the gap between technology and human interaction.

Sophia, the eldest of the three, gained significant attention upon her activation in 2016, particularly due to her humanoid appearance. She became well-known as a public face for AI, appearing in media and public events worldwide. 

In 2017, Sophia was named the first Innovation Champion by the United Nations Development Programme, making history as the first non-human to receive such an honour. That same year, Sophia was granted citizenship by Saudi Arabia, which further cemented her role as a symbol of AI innovation.

Following Sophia's prominence, two more robots were introduced: Grace and Desdemona. Desdemona, designed with a unique application, is part of Ben’s experimental band, Jam Galaxy. Ben, a prominent AI scientist, plays the keyboard while Desdemona improvises spoken word poetry in response to musical cues. 

This creative use of AI highlights Desdemona’s ability to engage in artistic expression, making her stand out in the field of humanoid robots.

The technology behind the rockstar

Desdemona’s intelligence is powered by SingularityNET’s decentralised AI platform, which ensures that her development remains open-source and community-driven. Unlike proprietary AI systems controlled by corporations, Desdemona’s framework is designed to be transparent and accessible.

Key aspects of her technology include:

Desdemona’s band, Desdemona’s Dream, consists of both AI and human musicians, demonstrating a collaborative future where:
